Due to the 60’s and 70’s urban development in Nottingham the areas that fall just outside the city centre have been cut off resulting in their degradation. An example of this is the area of Sneinton and in particular the market area. The Sneinton Market buildings, once a ‘thriving’ set of wholesale markets, are becoming derelict and its dirty avenues are making the place undesirable. Through identifying a set of strategies for the reappropriation of buildings, and the conditions in which to determine what is most suitable, the thesis looks to reappropriate the Sneinton Market buildings. Urban analysis of the markets context as well as relevant site studies will help inform which strategy is deployed when re-using the market buildings, as well as identifying an appropriate programme and function for the interventions. The thesis aims to create an urban catalyst for the city though reinventing the buildings, and tie the area of Sneinton back to the city.
